Mobility Hubs
It’s a car park but not as we know it…
What is a mobility hub? A space that offers co-located public and shared transport services.
But what does this mean? It’s the next step in the evolution of park & ride services, which could become complex interchanges where people can seamlessly switch between cars, buses, trains, cycles, scooters and walking.
What will mobility hubs provide? A concentration of mobility services in one place, as a way of creating sustainable public transport systems.
Is it all about ‘mobility’ No, far from it. The strength of the word ‘hub’ is that, compared to car park, it is a flexible term. Car parks or ‘hubs’ can and will be used for a whole host of uses, from vehicle charging and repairing stations, to solar power generation plants, to last-mile logistics bases and parcel collection/drop off locations, retailers, ‘dark kitchens’ and a host of leisure activities.
When reimagined as ‘mobility hubs’, car parks are no longer just places to store vehicles. Instead, they become opportunities to provide co-located public and shared transport services and, furthermore, a base to host alternative uses and services to enable the land to support the surrounding community more positively. Added uses will enable alternative revenue streams to be generated so the car park/hub can make financial sense, as well as social and environmental sense, to unlock the potential of a car park and enable it to evolve into a mobility hub.
